WeeeCharity Training Centre
Real kit. Real skills. Real confidence.
At our Training Centre, people learn by doing—with real computers, real tools, and really supportive staff. We welcome college students, Jobcentre referrals, volunteers with SEN (Special Educational Needs), and general volunteers who want to build confidence and give something back. Everyone gets the chance to develop work skills, life skills, and communication skills in a safe, friendly, genuinely buzzing workshop.
“I’ve gained so much confidence and made great friends… I love the daily challenge of taking apart computers.” — Alex, Supported Internship student (and future tech wizard)
What we do (in plain English)
-
Hands-on tech skills: diagnosing PCs and laptops, safe strip-downs, component testing, data-safe refurbishment, and responsible recycling.
-
Workplace habits: teamwork, time-keeping, health & safety, tidy workstations (we try), and project ownership.
-
Confidence & communication: asking questions, giving it a go, celebrating progress, helping the next person in line.
Our approach is person-centred—we adapt tasks, pace, and support to the individual. Many learners tell us they feel welcomed from day one, with clear choices of what to try next. (There’s a lot to try.)
Why your donated electronics matter (so, so much)
Every donated laptop, phone, router, or bundle of cables becomes learning material and social impact rolled into one:
Practice that isn’t pretend
Learners develop real skills on real equipment—fault-finding, safe dismantling, and refurbishment. It’s ten times better than worksheets. (No offence to worksheets.)
Data-safe reuse
Where possible we securely wipe to HMG IS5 Enhanced and put devices back to work—great for the planet, great for budgets. If reuse isn’t safe or possible, we recycle properly. (No landfill drama here.)
Confidence & progression
Hands-on success builds confidence. We regularly see volunteers move into apprenticeships, college progression, or paid roles—sometimes even mentoring others.
Community benefit
Your kit fuels our training and community programmes—environmental good and people good. That’s a win–win worth cheering.
Who it’s for
-
Students from local colleges, including Supported Internships and Industry Placements
-
Unemployed adults referred via the Jobcentre or partner organisations
-
People with SEN, who thrive with structure, patience, and practical tasks
-
General volunteers (16+) who want to learn, help out, and be part of a team
We work closely with colleges and support organisations; volunteers often tell us how welcoming the atmosphere is and how quickly they start contributing.
A day in the Centre (roughly)
Tea. Safety brief. Tools out. Then it’s triage devices, label and log, data-safe handling, repair/refurbish, or dismantle for parts and materials recovery. We finish with tidy-down and a quick “what went well”. (There’s usually something to celebrate—sometimes it’s even the cable drawer staying neat for a full 24 hours.)
Safeguarding, accessibility & support
We provide clear routines, visual prompts, step-by-step tasks, and flexible pacing. Staff are trained to support SEN learners and create a calm, respectful environment where questions are encouraged and effort is recognised.
What to donate
If it stored data or plugged in, chances are we can use it—PCs/laptops, tablets/phones, servers, networking gear, monitors, components, cables and more. (See our Accepted Electricals page for the full list, plus what we can’t take.)
How to donate (easy!)
-
Businesses: use our Free Business Collections form—add a rough kit list, parking notes, and any data-wiping needs.
-
Households: book via Free Residential Collection—same idea, just for home.
You’ll get confirmation by email and, before collection, we’ll send an ETA, team names, and a contact number. On the day, we arrive with a smile, apply barcoded labels for tracking, and handle the paperwork electronically. Easy for you, brilliant for our learners.
The bigger picture
We’re here to cut e-waste, protect the planet, and open doors for people—especially those who’ve been out of work, are new to the UK, or learn best by doing. Your old tech helps us make that happen, one confident volunteer at a time.
